Someone said "Hurt people hurt people." I guess you could say, "Cared for people care for people." Caring comes from within and usually involves at least sympathy. But, the deepest caring is empathy...when one doesn't just feel "for" someone, they feel "with" someone...feel their pain, feel their joy. We don't care when we "de-humanize" someone, make them less than human. We care when we "humanize" someone, make them not just another human, but a person who means something to us. I remember driving past a houseless older woman one time and for a split moment, she looked like my grandmother. I realized if my grandmother had been in need like her, I would not have hesitated to help. Then I realized, we're all connected! (Psalm 24:1) YBD
People can more easily care when they know something-- anything about someone else. But the knowledge [of the other person needing care] must come via self-discovery or self-education. You can never force people to care by JUST educating them, but giving them the tools to self-educate....maybe that's the way. Example: What if everyone had a diary that you could read....when someone flicked you off while driving, you saw their diary and understood what awful things had happened in their life--or maybe they just had a bad day. Similarly, when someone asks you for money, you could see what their life is like and understand....through self-discovery-- and therefore truly care about that person. MAYBE.
That's a good question. I think perhaps the first thing that moves people to care is experiential exposure. Exposure to just information never seems to be enough...although the Make Poverty History and One campaigns have done the best job I've seen on a large scale of raising informational awareness.
First hand exposure is hard to ignore and tends to break through the arguments individuals have against involvement. It's hard to personally interact with 3 year old homeless child and slip into a "they should all get jobs" mentality.
What makes me care? God puts the potential in ever person to care, to love to have compassion. We are made in his image...God is Love. Certainly, there are stimulus that ignite that care. Seeing the sincerity through the face and eyes of someone. (Like your card said..."when I saw the eyes of my son..") No one likes to be "dooped"..so they want to know its a genuine need. How do you show its genuine? A third person giving validation. Giving specifics..Joe needs a bicycle, Linda needs childcare so she can work, etc. When people truly care, I believe God has put that passion within them, at some point you either must act on that "hound of heaven" or make a conscious effort to push it away, thus taking us another step away from God. That's why children are so compassionate when they see a need - they haven't practiced the art of pushing God aside like most of us adults. Ask people to take their children with them when they visit these sights, they will see it all through their children's eyes and ask, "Why...why arent more people helping and why is this still a problem in a country so affluent." (That's why Bree at age 5, after seeing one of those TV comercials said, Mommy, let's a dopt a poor child" WE did and 21 years and $5000 later we are still giving $21 a month to CCF. Also another idea is breaking it down to "bit sizes" So it dosen't seem so overwhelming. One person helping another, one family helping one other family, in your same community.
